Research Interests

Nicaragua

Agricultural sustainability in the indigenous Atlantic Coastal areas of Nicaragua – with special focus on the establishment of community/territorial seed banks of native land races or heirloom seeds of primary crops such as rice, corn, and beans, etc. for the purpose of the prevention of hunger and long-term food sustainability.

Diagnostic studies for land titling cases involving indigenous communities of the Atlantic Coast of Nicaragua, to assist with legal claims on their traditional lands in coordination with the United Nation’s World Court, the Nicaraguan governments, and the World Bank. These studies involve recording oral history, ethnographic studies, socio-economic analysis, judicial studies, participatory GPS mapping of ancestral lands, natural resource harvest rates, and natural resource management participatory planning.

Fellowships and Funded Research

2007-2009 Alistar International Auto-Diagnostics, Participatory Land Claim Study in preparation for the Titling of the Ancestral Land Claim of Mayangna Sauni Arungkah - the forth lands of the Mayangna - MATUNGBAK, of the Panamahka clan.  This project also included legal assistance and counseling in the court case of the community of Mukuswas against colonists who had squatted on native lands for 9 years - the case was won by the indigenous people of Mukuswas, MATUNGBAK.  ($25,000 to date)
 
2002-2004 National Science Foundation (NSF) Dissertation Research Improvement Grant “Taro Farming, Cultural Survival, and Wetlands Conservation” ($18,000)
 
2003 World Bank/PRODEP-Nicaragua – funding to conduct participatory research with the Mayangna indigenous community of Awas Tingni (population ~1,000), to document their legal land claim (943.95 km2). ($65,000)
